A new cookbook, Created to Nourish: Plant-Based Gluten-Free Recipes, Soy-Free Options, by Delores
Mishleau, provides a fresh approach to healthy eating with simple, nutritious recipes designed for busy individuals and those with dietary restrictions. Featuring plant-based, gluten-free, and peanut-free meals, this cookbook not only offers tasty dishes but also includes Bible promises and spiritual encouragement with each recipe.
Mishleau never imagined writing a cookbook, but when a close friend asked her to co-author a collection of plant-based recipes, she felt God leading her to take on the challenge. Shortly after the project began, her co-author stepped away, leaving Mishleau to continue on her own. Despite the unexpected change, she remained committed, believing that God had called her to complete the book.
The journey was not without struggles. Mishleau faced multiple challenges, including financial setbacks and publishing delays. A key sponsor and promoter backed out after months of silence, leading to uncertainty. Yet, her faith in God’s plan kept her moving forward. Encouragement from family, friends, and dedicated prayer warriors strengthened her resolve, and an elderly couple stepped in to sponsor the book’s publication—reminding her that God was still guiding the process.
This book is designed for individuals seeking healthier eating habits, especially those with gluten sensitivities or dietary restrictions. Mishleau created recipes that are quick and easy to prepare, making them ideal for busy families.
The cookbook also serves as a resource for those who want to explore plant-based nutrition but don’t know where to start. Mishleau hopes to help readers understand the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle as designed by “the first Dietician” and encourages them to nourish their bodies in a way that aligns with biblical principles.
Mishleau’s passion for plant-based cooking is deeply rooted in her upbringing. Growing up in a family that valued organic gardening, food preservation, and hospitality, she learned the importance of wholesome, homemade meals. A neighbor first introduced her mother to a plant-based macaroni and cheese recipe when Mishleau was just a child—an experience that sparked her journey toward a fully plant-based diet. Over the years, she learned to cook dairy-free and egg-free meals, eventually embracing a gluten-free lifestyle after experiencing its health benefits firsthand.
Her book is more than a collection of recipes; it’s a reflection of her life’s journey and the people who influenced her along the way. From a nanny who taught her how to cook without eggs to personal health challenges that led her to eliminate gluten, Mishleau shares the experiences that shaped her approach to food and wellness.
Writing and publishing Created to Nourish came with many obstacles, including financial difficulties and repeated delays. Mishleau admits that the waiting tested her patience but also strengthened her faith.
“I wasn’t sure if I was developing callouses or just wearing thin,” she says. “But I knew I had to keep going.”
Her son, Benjamin, and his wife, Myla, played a key role in helping with the text, photography, and distribution ideas. Friends and supporters covered the project in prayer, reassuring her that God had a plan for this book.
Looking back, Mishleau draws encouragement from history, comparing her setbacks to William Miller’s experience during the Great Disappointment of 1844. While initially discouraged, she found renewed hope that God would use her prayers and struggles to bless others through Created to Nourish.
