While writing to his apprentice and colleague in ministry Timothy, Paul writes the following lines: “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” (1 Timothy 6:17-19)
These words punched me in the gut and filled my heart with longing!
Punched, because I often make the mistake of getting worked up after the riches “of this present world”. No, I am not talking about the money I make working as a Pastor. I am talking about the relentless pursuit of the illusion of well being. I want to look at my finances and feel at peace. I want to look at my health and feel at peace. I want to look at my relationships and feel at peace. My goal is to see everything under control, with no bad weeds, or earthquakes, coming to the surface. So, I wake up daily ready to run after whatever I need to catch in order to feel good. Why is it an illusion? Because if you’ve lived long enough, you know that no matter what, life is fragile, and it doesn’t take much at all to break it.
That’s why Paul says: invest your daily living in something better. Something more infinitely more stable and lasting than money, health or flattering relationships. Be rich in doing good. Think of others before you think of yourself. When I do, I’ll take hold of that life that is truly life. What on earth does that mean? I believe Paul means that when we live primarily for the good of others, we begin to live a life that has the quality of eternal life. Don’t misunderstand me, or Paul. The point is not to be careless or neglectful about self care. The point is to not be arrogant and foolish, resting your identity and good life on that which moth destroys and thief steals. Instead, live life in a way that can be extended forever.
I long to live that life. I pray God helps me see my arrogance, forgives me, cleanses me from it and teaches me to live more and more for who and for what matters most. I pray He does the same for you too.
